LESSON 3
11th Commandment, “Thou shalt not poison thyself!”
Now the bottom line in your daily life and it could easily be listed as the 11th Commandment, “Thou shalt not poison thyself!” We can’t poison ourselves from the time we get up till we go to bed at night without having some kind of problem. And the longer we try to appease the condition and continue the same habits that got us sick in the first place, well we will ultimately find ourselves in a worse condition. This is not rocket science stuff here. In summation, do healthy things and you are rewarded handsomely with glowing health. You’re special and deserve it!

A Great Breakfast
What can you eat in the morning when you're on the road or at home, for that matter?
There are two basic reasons we need to eat ... for energy, and so that our bodies can
build and repair themselves! We know there are several other reasons we need to eat ... for the vitamin and mineral content of food... for the fluids... for fiber ... and various other reasons.
You can enjoy the energy type of foods at the beginning and throughout the day. The energy foods are the fruits and starches. We encourage all our clients to begin their day with fresh, succulent, delicious fruit that's in season and can grow where you are at the time. And, if at mid-morning you feel hungry again, have more fresh fruit, or perhaps some kind of wholesome cereal such as oatmeal or a bran muffin or two with some herbal tea. This will carry you over to the noon meal without feeling the least bit hungry.
For years I used to have coffee and donuts. I guess it was because of tradition. Then I got to loving the taste of it. As years went by, I found myself serving all my food on the basis of taste and tradition, and did it in haste and forgot about nutrition. But then it hit me! Just because there's staples of a population, doesn't give it any virtues.
So, now my basic philosophy about eating is very simple:
"If I want to be tough, I've got to eat good stuff!"
From Daytona Beach, Florida, this is Wayne Pickering encouraging you to never supplement a bad diet, we need to correct a bad diet!
Instead of that cup of coffee and possibly a sweet roll for your breakfast, what's a good pick-up in the morning? What would be a real good way to start the day? Did you know that fresh fruit is a real good pick-up?
So, what kind of fruit would be good to start the day? Any of your favorite fruits that's in season and can grow where you are at the time. Now, if you're in an area where fruit is not grown, eat the kind of fruit that will ripen after it's picked. Practically all fruit is picked green to ship and most fruits will not ripen after they're picked, rendering little or no value to you whatsoever.
Here are a few fruits that will ripen after they're picked: Golden Delicious apples;
apricots; bananas; guava; mangoes (- yummm); papaya; pears; persimmons;
pineapples; plums; pomegranates; avocados; and cactus fruit.
The fruits which will not ripen after they're picked are all the apples, except the golden delicious; all berries; cherries; citrus fruit; figs; grapes; melons; nectarines and peaches.
If you still want to have a cup of coffee during the day, have it around 2:30 or 3:00 pm. Maybe once or twice a week, instead of the coffee and donuts / sweet rolls or colas and candy bars, try your favorite fruit. This will be a quantum leap for your nutrition education and your body will reward you highly for it.
Bacon and eggs and those type of foods, are protein foods which are designed primarily for repair and not for energy. Fruit usually takes about 1- hour to digest and they are already in an energy form. The protein foods will take as much as 4-6 hours to break down into the repair/building nutrients. Then it will take several more hours to convert them into an energy source. So, logically speaking, since we need energy at the beginning and throughout the day, it would be a good idea to start the day with something like fruit. Save the protein foods for a better time of day. We'll discuss protein foods in another article.
This is Wayne Pickering encouraging you to invest in yourself by making quality food your first concern and not your last resort and you'll never make a bad investment!
A Super Lunch
What's a good lunch to have when you are away from home?
This meal should be the most satisfying and biggest meal of the day. And it's a good idea to include a starch of some kind, but omit the protein (meat, eggs, cheese, nuts or seeds) at this meal.
Now, what's a starch? How about a potato prepared the way you like it most? Or maybe some whole-grain bread or some quality pasta, or even some brown rice along with some vegetables. I try not to eat any raw onions or tomatoes at this meal. These foods make it too hard for the starch digestive process.
I feel a good point to remember about starches is that they should have lots of color in them. Starches that are white are trite ... almost totally void of nutrients. I keep this in mind when I eat starches, especially when it comes to bread ... "the whiter the bread, the wider the spread, the sooner I'm dead!"
The benefit it of eating the starch at this meal is it helps to build that sustaining energy we need for the rest of the day. It's one of those energy gaining and not energy draining foods I encourage you to bask in the miracle of the dynamically wonderful you ... with all of your special uniqueness.
What's a good dinner (some people refer to it as supper) when you are on the road, or home, for that matter?
We've found it helpful to make this the smallest meal of the day. There's a cliche that goes something like this: Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and supper like a pauper. Well, I feel there's a lot of merit to this. But let's interpret it this way: The breakfast and lunch could be the largest meals of the day and should supply us with an abundance of energy.
It would be more helpful if the evening meal was the smallest one for the day, with the recommendation that it be your protein meal. We really don't need a lot of protein in our diet. At no other time in our lives will we grow at the percentage as that from birth until we're 3 years old. And we do that when being fed breast milk, which is really only 11% protein.
Now that we have our body growth, we shouldn't have to add 20-30% protein in our diets. In my experience, all we really have to do is to shine these bodies up with the right amount of protein. So, how can we gauge how much we need to eat? It really doesn't matter if we're vegetarians or not. We should try to cap off the amount of protein we eat at about 4 ounces or about the size of a single deck of cards.
A good cliche to remember about the evening meal: Eat light at night! It takes about 15 minutes for the signal from your stomach to get to your brain to let it know you're full. It's called the satiety factor... Hence, "satisfaction". So, if you can remember to stop eating before you get that full feeling, you'll be amazed at the progress with your weight management and energy enhancement program.
Now, if you're eating nuts, seeds or avocados, don't be too concerned with the fat if you're only eating 4 ounces as this is the kind of fat that your body really needs. There are 3 classes of food: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. We need a certain amount of fat in our diet. But if you're eating a lot of meat, either chicken, fish, red meats, eggs or dairy in any form, it would be a good idea to concern yourself with this kind of fat because it's the hardest type of fat for the body to deal with.
Here's a really healthy way to eat your evening protein meal: Eat greens with proteins. And try not to eat it within 4 hours before you go to bed as it takes about that long for any source of protein to finish digesting.
So, try this: Ask for a garden fresh salad to eat before your meal ... then have 2 or 3 greens (could be cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, or whatever green vegetables you enjoy the most ... prepared the way you like it. Combine these vegetables with 4 ounces of whatever source of protein you like (other than frying, as we've found "The more you fry, the sooner you die!"). Sounds simple enough, don't you agree?
From Daytona Beach, Florida, this is Wayne Pickering reminding you that if you eat a little, you digest a lot ... but if you eat a lot, you digest a little. Stay terrific!
